Grief is one of life’s most personal and challenging experiences. As someone who has experienced the loss of my own mother, I understand that grief is not simply about missing someone. It is learning to navigate a world that looks different without someone who has always been part of it.

While caring for my mom, I experienced what is known as anticipatory grief. I watched someone I loved change, and I grieved the conversation we could no longer share in the same way.

Grief can begin long before a loved one passes away. Sometimes, we grieve the changes we see happening, the conversations we can no longer have, and the moments we know will never look the same. And when loss occurs, we may find ourselves experiencing emotions we weren’t prepared for.

One thing I have learned is that grief doesn’t follow a timeline. Some days feel manageable, while others catch us completely off guard. Grief may look like sadness, anger, exhaustion, or even moments of laughter when we least expect them. There is no single right way to grieve, and healing doesn’t mean forgetting the person we lost.

As a mental health therapist, I believe no one should have to navigate the grief process alone. Grief counseling offers a safe, compassionate space to process your emotions, explore your experience, and discover ways to move forward without feeling pressured to leave your grief behind.

If you are grieving, please give yourself permission to take things one day at a time. You don’t have to have everything figured out, and you don’t have to be strong every moment. You can learn to live with loss while still honoring the love that remains. And you deserve support along the way.
