Your 20’s can be an exciting time of life, but they can also feel incredibly uncertain. We live in a world that seems to offer endless possibilities, making it easy to compare ourselves to others and wonder if we are falling behind. Social media can make it seem like everyone else has their career, relationships, and future figured out while we are still asking ourselves, “What am I doing with my life?”
Although we are more connected than ever, many people in their 20’s are experiencing loneliness and a lack of meaningful community. It can be difficult to know where we belong, what we value, and what direction we want our lives to take.
Helping people navigate their 20’s is a passion of mine in my therapy practice. I have a great deal of empathy for the challenges that come with this stage of life and how easy it can be to fall into thoughts like, “I’m not good enough,” “I’m behind,” or “Everyone else has it figured out except me.”
I believe that finding peace in uncertainty starts with getting to know ourselves. What do I value? What kind of person do I want to be? What brings purpose to my life? What qualities am I looking for in a partner? Instead of feeling like we need to have our entire future figured out, therapy can help us slow down, understand ourselves, and focus on taking the next right step.
One approach I use is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps clients recognize the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Our thoughts and beliefs can act like the steering wheel of the car we are driving through life. By getting off autopilot and examining the beliefs guiding us, we can begin to challenge thoughts like “I’m behind” and develop perspectives that help us move forward.
Relationships are another important part of navigating your 20’s. Using attachment and Gottman-informed approaches, we can better understand how we connect with others, recognize patterns in our relationships, and build practical skills for communication and conflict. These tools can help us create healthier, more meaningful relationships and stronger connections.
Your 20’s do not have to be about having everything figured out. They can be a time of discovering who you are, building meaningful connections, and creating a life that reflects what truly matters to you. Sometimes, finding your way begins with simply taking the next right step.
